Wicklow 200/100

Congratulations to everybody who completed the Wicklow 200 and Wicklow 100. A fantastic day for cycling, best in many a year.

  2. How about timing next years Wickow 200 to be on the weekend after the Dragon Ride in Wales so people can ride both? I was thinking of doing both but as they were on the same day I opted for the Dragon Ride instead of the W200. I saw a good number of Irish cycling Jerseys on the Dragon Ride, they are potential customers to be tapped!!

  5. THE DAY OF A LIFETIME IN THE SAVAGE GARDEN

    Wicklow, quite rightly, rejoices in it's title as the Garden County. But spinning up, down and around its stunning hills and glens was something of a daunting experience yesterday - this was at times a potentially savage garden, with sweat and toil aplenty for the hardy bucks and ladies of the 2013 Wicklow 200.

    First and foremost, what an event. The overall organising, stewarding and attention to detail by the Irish Veteran Cyclists Association are simply superb. Facilities, the attitude of support and co-operation, the calm and easy efficiency, all these make a special day much more manageable and memorable. But boy, it's tough.

    I am a novice cyclist at long distances anyway, though I have been barreling around the streets of Dublin for nearly 40 years now. Add in the nature of the trip itself and the conditions for this year's event and you have, certainly for me at any rate, one of this country's supreme sporting challenges. It was hot, it was dry, at times it was sweltering and when we did get the cooling effects of that south, south-east breeze, it was capriciously right into our faces on the hoped-for temporary relief along the straight, flat section from Baltinglass to Tinahely. I knew I was out of my depth when I saw a road sign for Enniscorthy!

    Then there are the twin peaks of Slieve Maan and Glenmalure. I will never drive those roads again, never pass a touring cyclist again, without a much better understanding of just what is involved. This is Colditz sitting next door to Guantanamo Bay - quite simply, a torture chamber. All the more reason for admiring the unstoppable men and women who made their way up both. I heard two young lads from Carrickmacross, I think it was, delighting in the slogan 'Hammer Point' painted across the road half-way up Glenmalure. I just buried the head and tried to keep the machine moving.

    There were a couple of dirty little ones towards the end - 'snakey' as the man from Nenagh described them. The pull out of Avoca, just when you think you might be spinning safely for home with all the climbing done, is a bit of a heart breaker. But hey, this is what you signed up for, and despite the difficulty and the heat and the dust of the road and the breathlessness and the sunburn and the exhaustion, the feeling of achievement and fulfillment will stand way up there for you in the list of those things of which you are proud to say, 'yeah, I've done that'.

    And like the respect which mountaineers pay to the high slopes they visit, you can't ever say you've 'conquered' the Wicklow 200. Rather, you may be fortunate enough to be allowed to participate in its glories once every summer. There probably won't be another W200 for me, but everyone should have a go at it and everyone who can should go again, while they have the health and the strength to do so. My sincere thanks to the IVCA once again and also to David Daly of Joe Daly Cycles, who patiently and expertly re-configured my machine to get a crock with 3 degenerative discs up and over the heights of Wicklow. 200k of thanks David (that's kilometres by the way, not euros........)

    Final thoughts - to the steward at the door of the Rathdrum check-station who got me two pain-killers out of his own personal bag, mile buiochas. And to the last hand I shook, the man guarding traffic at the Shoreline in the early evening - great job, I said. Delighted you enjoyed it, he replied. I didn't say I enjoyed it, I said. But he smiled and clearly knew what I meant. I may never again do anything so utterly unforgettable.

  6. I have entered the Wicklow 200 since 2004. Most recently, due to bad weather and/or lack of fitness I've done the 100km route, but this year was determined to go for the big one. However, about 3km after Junction 4 near the bottom of the Wicklow Gap my rear derailleur lost the battle to find lower gears and got sucked through the wheel. I fell to the side without managing to unclip and when I got up I saw the damage. As usual, passing cyclists, asked if I was OK or if I needed help so I was able to get a message passed to my friend Charlie, who had been a couple of hundred metres ahead of me, to let him know that I'd had "a mechanical" but that he should carry on.

    After taking the remnants of the derailleur out of the wheel and collecting the bits of chain and outer cable from the road I freewheeled back down to Junction 4. The two marshals there were friendly and symapathetic and offered to give me a lift back to base after they wrapped up. We chatted a bit about travelling the country to take part in or watch races or TTs and in between I managed to get through on the IVCA breakdown phone number. The lovely Susan took my call and assured me that help was on the way. After a while a blue Transit van arrived, driven by Derek Humphries (of Humphries Cycles in Finglas). To my amazement he had not just the parts needed to repair my bike, but also the skill to have the job done in about 5 minutes! It was just as well I hadn't done a Bradley Wiggins and tossed the chain over the hedge when I broke down. After another quick phone call to Charlie I was on my way again.

    Charlie waited at the top of the Wicklow Gap and we carried on to complete the ride, although Charlie forged ahead after Slieve Maan and finished about half an hour ahead of me. By Slieve Maan I had thought I wasn't going to finish before the controls closed, but despite the sneaky climbs out of Avoca and beyond I managed to get my speed up so that I finished with about 5 minutes to spare. Definitely my most eventful Wicklow yet.

    To close I need to thank a few people, the marshals at Junction 4 for the craic and encouragement, Susan and Derek for dealing with my breakdown so efficiently and all of the marshals and support staff who kept working so that slowcoaches like me didn't arrive to deserted stop points. Finally,thanks also to Charlie McSherry, who kept his pace down so i could follow and who made sure that there was some food and a shower waiting for me at the finish. We'll both be back next year. (This year #33 and #1333).

  7. Great money making scheme by the Wicklow 200 crew. for €40 with little back in return, not even intermediate water stops especially with the day and heat that was in it plus some of the road surfaces were absolutely lethal.. #firstandlasttimetowicklow

  8. Really enjoyed the day, but bonked badly at the bottom of Glenmalure and would have given myself a 0.5% chance of finishing the distance when I arrived in Rathdrum. However, I refuelled, re-hydrated and re-focused and pressed on not a bother.

    All the wingey moaners out there talking about value for money for their 40 quid - you are missing the point entirely. If you want trinkets of tat for the sake of it, head down to your nearest euro / pound stretcher and fill your boots there. I for one thought the event was well organised, signalled, marshalled (with really good humour) and supported by spectators. If you have a beef with the road surfaces, I suggest you pick up the phone to Mr Vradkar who actually is accountable for transport, and not point the finger at the organisers of this.

This was my first time to take part in the Wicklow 200 and I must say it was one of my most enjoyable days spent on my bike weather was perfect and the scenery around Wicklow was simply spectacular the event was very well marshelled and the food stops were perfect . Will defiantly be back next year. Anybody that likes cycling and likes hilsl this is the event for you.

  11. Must be at least 5 or 6 years since I first did the Wicklow 200, and I came back this year for more. My over-riding memory of that first occasion was those 2 big hills in the middle, tougher than what I had been used to; and also then the fabulous atmosphere on the summits.
    This time I had done less training…though had a better bike and fancied I was a bit more experienced. But once again I crawled up those hills – it felt like a religious pilgrimage, single file and in silence…super-slow motion…but so rewarding once I got to the top, which was every bit as good as last time.
    I had come over from Scotland for the event, with arrangements to meet up with some other cyclists I knew from the UK and Ireland, and it was so enjoyable hanging out with fellow bike enthusiasts, all sharing the same experiences. And there was a family angle: my Mum did the event too, and we shared some quality time here and there en route.
    It was possibly the most sociable 200km I’ve ever had, lots of chat along the way. I was impressed the lengths people had gone to to be there for the Wicklow 200. It’s so great to see so many cycling people doing their thing. And I loved checking out the jerseys from all the clubs around Ireland, and a few others like myself from overseas.
    It seemed to me that the organisation was seamless, and the organisers should be very proud of themselves for achieving this – they deserved the good weather more than anyone maybe. I am really pleased I did it again in 2013, and appreciate more why the Wicklow 200 has a special appeal.

  12. Well done, it was a great day the route is fantastic, the stops well organised, the marshals very helpful and great atmosphere in the peleton, and we got lucky with the wheather. Quite different to my the spins I do on my own in the bad season!

  13. Last but not least I made it ,my first Wicklow 200. What a feeling of ecstasy as I reached the finishline more than twelve and a half hours after I set out ,the lovely Phil by my side whom I owe much gratitude to for all his words of encouragement and support in getting me there safely especially the last approx 45km when I hit the biggest wall of my cycling career to date!

    What a day! Thanks to powerade and their cola caffeine sweets at the top of Slieve Maan i was on flying form all the way to Rathdrum.

    Unfortunately that was to be shortlived as Orla, Owen ,Phil and I set out on the homeward stretch passing through the beautiful Avoca looking forward to our next climb I started to feel as if my wheels were sticking to the melting tar and the air was thinning rapidly as if entering the death zone.

    Cleated in is not a good time to feel like this I said to myself as I managed to park myself safely by a gate and watch the remaining cyclists climb slowly but steadily.

    Phil sat with me until I regained my strength to move on again. Orla and Owen waited patiently at the top of the hill (mind is blank as to the name of it) but unable to contact us rightly so continued homewards knowing I was in good hands. Phil eventually got a message to them saying all ok so we winded our way slowly but surely.

    After a pit stop at Ashford for Ice cream I suddenly found my cycling legs again and reached Greystones feeling stronger than ever!

  14. Brilliant, superb, fantastic - best sportive I have taken part in. Would put this down as a MUST DO RIDE.

    Route was brilliant, the Wicklow Mountain scenery stunning. I particularly liked the views while climbing the Wicklow Gap. Slieve Maan & Glenmalure were hard climbs - well worth it as the descents were awesome. Following the route was easy as the 'w' road markings with arrows worked really well. Fellow riders were very friendly & helpful. After the Wicklow Gap I joined a large group and we flew all the way to Baltinglass - felt like being in a peleton.

    Feed stations were exellent - seemed to come at the right distance and had good amounts of needed food. I still managed to 'bonk' at about 175K and struggled for the next 15k before picking up for the last 10k. Stormed back into Greystones with a huge smile on my face.

    The organisation was fantastic - registration easy, no delays setting off. Quality of roads was v. good for 80% of ride, really surprised me (much better than in England). Marshalling very helpful. The weather of course was unbelievable -really topped it all off.

    A huge thank you to all the organisers and well done to everyone who took part - I shall remember Sunday 9th June 2013 as one of my best ever cycling days!

  16. Great day out! I share the sentiments. I will be back next year and hopefully it will be nice and warm again.

    I do have 2 suggestions for next year though:

    1. Provide water at the top of Slieve Maan - my mouth was like a sticky sweet by the time I got to the top and all that was up there was more sticky, sweet energy drinks - when all I wanted was to rinse my mouth out.

    2. Would it not be better to provide cycling jerseys instead of medals? I wouldn't be opposed to paying an extra €10.00 entry fee. Or be given the choice at least? You could ask people to give their size upon entry. Maybe there's even something in it for you if you sell advertising spaces on the jersey?

    I look forward to next years event.

    Great day cycling in Wicklow. Thanks to all who looked after the food stops and standing on the side of the road for hours waiting to give directions.

    The first time to do this and had a great day cycling with friends.

    But then ended with a sour taste in my mouth. To be told that there were no Certs and Medals left was a big let down to say the least. After all, we all had to register before hand, so there is no excuse as to why you ran out. I think you need to sort this out now, due to it is nearly two months since we were told they will be in the post.

    I do hope it will be sorted, because I think it is unfair to all the people that did put in all the hard work to be let down.

I must admit that the taking part was rewarding enough, but considering the event cost €40 and in my case €45 as late entrant, it seemed a farce that this was the case. And to this day still have received nothing.

      Hopefully I receive something in the post very soon.

  22. I only got mine in September! If they run out of medals next year I'll just get a loan of one to take a few pictures on the day - after that the medal is sitting in a box somewhere...
